An Appeal to Celebrate the 5th Sikh Turban Day Throughout the
World.
March 11, 2008, Fremont, California: The Sikh Children Forum called an important meeting today and started preparations for the 5th Sikh Turban Day that will be celebrated throughout the world. The forum had appealed to Sikh organizations and Gurdwaras to observe the Sikh Turban day like the previous years and organize turban tying camps, turban competitions, turban seminars and turban tying ceremonies. The Sikh Children forum invites Sikh writers, journalists and those associated with the film media to write historical articles related to the importance of turban. In order to make this event successful, it urges the Sikh populations to wear a turban on that day and educate non-Sikhs about the importance of turban.
The primary objective of the Turban Day to educate the general public about the significance of the turban. The turban signifies the glory & unique identity of the Sikhs. It is also to encourage the Sikhs to wear turban. The Sikh Turban Day will be celebrated on April 13, 2008 (a day before Vaisakhi).
The Turban Day was initiated by Sikh Children Forum in 2003 and the first Sikh Turban Day was observed in California in 2004. The Shromani Gurdwara Committee adopted it as a Sikh National cause and both SGPC and Akal Purakh Ki Fauj celebrated it in 2004 in Amritsar. In the following year many others Sikh organization also started to celebrate this day in their own ways. Looking at the success and positive results of this effort, SGPC recognized the Sikh Dastar Diwas and permanently included it in the Nanakshahi Calendar and Almanac.
More than 100 Gurdwaras and Sikh organizations organized Sikh camps last year and distributed free turbans on that day. The entire project was coordinated with the help of Sikh Children Forum, United Sikhs, Sher-e-Punjab organization (of Surrey, Canada), and Sikh Phulwari (of Stockton, USA). They worked with many Gurdwara committees and Sikh organizations in making it a successful event. To add further glory to this event, Akal Purakh Ki Fauj (Amritsar), took out a fabulous carnival in Amritsar highlighting the importance of turban. This was a unique event. All these organizations are geared up to celebrate the Sikh Turban Day so that the Vaisakhi (the day Khalsa Panth was established) can be celebrated by the Sikhs in turbans with great pomp and show.
S. Hardip Singh, the spokesman for the Sikh Children Forum said, “Even though our primary objective is to help the Sikh younger generation with our Sikh heritage, it has also become necessary to connect the Sikh parents to their Sikh roots, who might have drifted away from our heritage for one reason or another.” Therefore, each and every Sikh is requested to participate in this event. Those Sikhs who already wear turbans are requested to encourage others to wear turban on that day and teach them how to do it. Those Sikhs, who do not tie a turban, are requested to do it on that day and encourage their children to do the same and encourage them to get connected with the Sikh heritage and seek Guru’s blessings. Many turban tying experts will be available on this day in the Gurdwaras who will teach how to tie a turban in a particular style. Free colorful turbans will be provided to all who are interested in tying a turban.
